Interviu cu Mike Seidel (Bayer Consumer Health), Membru al Consiliului Director RASCI

What is your first memory related to the beginning of your career?

A world full of opportunities. I have joined Bayer during my internship and my studies. It was an international program. I always wanted to do marketing and consumer marketing. Then when I joined Bayer, I had the opportunity to join the Consumer Health division early on and realize what great brands they really have, like Aspirin and Canesten and all the nutritional and Bepanthen. It is consumer marketing with a positive impact on consumers lives. This had brought together two exciting things for me: building great brands with trust, quality and value to the consumers and really making a difference in their lives. And all this in an international company, with the opportunity to gain experience in different countries and cultures.

How did you cross paths with Bayer?

I was looking for what to do with my future: I was young and I was thinking that business area is always a good thing to do and a good answer when you do not know yet what you are really super good at. I didn’t want to go to a pure German University as it felt too theoretical to me, but I knew that academic education is an important foundation. Bayer offered an internal combined program, that was academic but also at the same time very hands on on the job training across departments and functions and projects. I saw the announcement in the newspaper, applied and was lucky to get the job. This episode happened back in 1995 and they still run the program today.

What didn’t you learn “at school”, but life/ experience taught you?

The MBA that I did added a lot, as the MBA brought all the theory in a case-based environment. I studied in the UK and there were 23 different nations in the class. That variety of thoughts, of approaches, of life experiences, of how you go about things, was really mind opening for me. It’s this diversity that brings a team forward if the people have the right attitude and are committed to achieving a common goal. You just get so much stronger. This was the first thing. And the second thing is the insights, the consumer insights. You really need to have a good brand story, you really need to know what problem you are solving for the consumer and then you can build on that story. My experience of almost 7 years in the US was a real big marketing knowledge and helped me understand that solving problems for the consumer is not always about a functional problem, it is much more if you can also bind your solution with a purpose, that you are building brands with a purpose. That is when the emotional connection with the consumers and the brand really starts and that can survive hundreds of years.

If you did not do what you are doing right now (as a job), what would you do and why?

Probably I would be working in the nature. I would renaturalize rivers, bring them back to their original state. I am a bit of a systems thinker and the positive impact an ecosystem can have on us, while being connected with the outdoors is important to me and I like that.

How do you see our industry transform in the next 10 to 20 years?

I think what we’re going to see is more health literacy for the consumers, more responsibility and capability in taking care of their own health. This will allow them to play a more important role in a more connected healthcare market. Self-care analytic tools driven by artificial intelligence which will support both patients/ consumers and doctors coupled with advances in treatments will drive a need for balance between healthcare systems and patient involvement. Budgets need to be balanced and resources will need to be even more so allocated with the biggest impact for the patient, while taking into account the abilities of the systems. Based on this I am also sure we’ll see new business models that will help consumers/ patients to understand better what their body needs, more diagnostics tools; more information will be available and usable.

What is your source of motivation and good mood?

I am excited when I see how a team took an idea, built on it, made it better and with that really made a difference to what was there before. Be it for the population, the consumer, the customer, the organization or just for plans for the weekend. Passionate people engaging on one goal is a great energizer for me, as I always like to learn something new.

What do you admire at your fellow industry colleagues?

I think what I really admire is the agility and ability to identify and quickly act on opportunities and creating win-win solutions for your patients and for the industry that you’re active in, in a sustainable way providing a long term value to the consumers, to the society and to your company.

Ti-a ramas in minte una dintre cartile citite ca fiind revelatoare?

What do you like to read (as favorite authors and/ or books)? Do you remember a book that you read as revealing?

When I read or better if I have a chance to read a book, which is not easy with the job and 2 little kids, I am a bit of an easy read escapist. I enjoy reading D. Brown, J. Grisham or F. Schaetzing books, to name a few.

9. Iti place sa petreci majoritatea timpului tau liber facand…

You like to spend most of your free time doing…

Fun stuff with my wife and kids. I have a son who turns five and a daughter who just turned three; being outside with them, being on the floor building LEGO are great ways to relax and recharge.

10. Te simti cel mai fericit atunci cand…

Atunci când sunt cu familia mea.

You feel the happiest when…

When I am with my family.

If you could choose any place in the whole world to live, what would that be?

I had the pleasure of living in very nice places. Currently I am very happy here in Bucharest, my family too. Being close to the sea and mountains is a great asset and would definitely put the place high on the list.

A thought for young people who want to join this industry or are at the beginning of their career in the industry?

What I am always looking for is being curios, look where you can make a difference and challenge the status quo. All the things you need to learn can be learned, it is more and more a continuous-learning world. Try things out, fail early, fail fast and do not be scared of making mistakes and then really build on what you learned from that. I think for young people, the first decade is the time when you can really try things out, get good mentors/ teachers. Do not be too stable yet, see if from every experience you can learn something.
